GNU/Linux and FOSS versus “Software Piracy”
Tuesday, 29 September 2009 05:35

For quite some time now I have had a vague notion to write about so-called “software piracy”. That vague notion has sharpened into a resolve to write about Proprietary Closed Source Software (PCSS), “software piracy”, GNU/Linux, Free Open Source Software (FOSS) and your business.

Torvalds Calls Linux Kernel 'Huge And Bloated'
Wednesday, 23 September 2009 18:19

The Linux kernel is getting too big too fast, and that's negatively affecting Linux performance. While this might sound like a message fromMicrosoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s marketing team, it's actually a frank admission that Linus Torvalds made Monday in a roundtable discussion at the LinuxCon event in Portland, Ore. Asked whether features are being added to the Linux kernel too quickly, and whether this is affecting Linux performance, Torvalds acknowledged that this is indeed a problem. The Linux kernel has also grown to the point where it's no longer streamlined and efficient, Torvalds added.

A new Linux netbook based on Moblin will be introduced this week, and it may represent a new way that the Linux community is approaching the mass market. Leaders at the first Linuxcon Conference in Portland, Oregon, hinted at an announcement to come this week at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco that they say will reassert Linux's initial momentum in the netbook market. "You're going to see this week interesting new netbooks coming out that are killer. They have the cool factor and they're priced right," said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation.

Free Linux, Proprietary Linux
Tuesday, 22 September 2009 17:56

Linux's heart is open source. But developers can pick and choose how much, if any, proprietary software they want to include in their distribution. Recently, the Free Software Foundation announced its two latest additions to its listing of open-source purist distributions. This news lead me to thinking about both these distributions and the best of the distributions that go the other way and contain a great deal of proprietary programs.

Switching to Linux: A Windows developer’s view
Wednesday, 16 September 2009 22:36

A few weeks ago, I switched my development environment from Windows to Linux, on a project which was developed so far on Windows only. In this post, I want to describe the issues that brought me to this switch, a short overview how I did the actual port, and some observations on Linux for developers. This is the first post in a series of at least two, the second post will describe the tools I use on Linux right now.

Can Microsoft Ever Be Accepted by the Linux Community?
Wednesday, 16 September 2009 06:26

Once, the CEO of the company for which I worked had a bright idea. He would sponsor a young open source software coder for the summer, and, in return, the coder would assign the copyright of his application to the company. Fortunately, the young coder consulted some lawyers in his family, and refused. His application went on to become a basic tool in the administration of the free desktop. The company, like so many in the Dot-com era that tried to prey upon free software, went bankrupt. The last I heard, the CEO was a supplier to health food stores.

Archos 5: The Linux Internet tablet for everyone
Wednesday, 16 September 2009 06:24

I didn't expect much from the Archos 5 Internet tablet -- and I was surprised. This Android Linux powered device is more than just another would-be iPod Touch competitor; it's a powerful touch computer in its own right. The Archos 5 is a do-it-all handheld device. While it's no iPhone, it does everything else. (Personally, as a long-time iPod Touch fan, I'm just fine with devices that don't include telephony.)

The Curious Case of the OIN Patent Coup
Tuesday, 15 September 2009 06:04

Microsoft has launched CodePlex, a new foundation whose purpose is to bridge the FOSS and commercial software worlds. The initiative is being taken with several tons of salt in the FOSS community, considering Redmond's recent maneuvers regarding Linux patents. Was it just getting rid of property it didn't intend to develop? Or was it hoping patent trolls would wreak a little havoc?
